The Ken Holland Award is awarded annually to recognize the work of the general manager deemed to have done the best job over the course of the season. The 2015-16 winner was Josh of the Tampa Bay Lightning. The 2016-17 nominees are:
Duncan (OTT) - He's built the top team in the league (and a good prospect group) from a not-great stock roster. Many believe he should've won the Holland last season, but after taking the next step his case appears even stronger.
Josh (TB) - Defending champ of the Holland, his team took a half-step back from the juggernaut it was last season, but he managed to stay under the cap and put out yet another 60 win season.
Nick (TOR) - From bottom team in the league to legit contender, Nick certainly had the most active (and in a positive way) off-season.

Duncan for me. Built a dominant team in 2 seasons from the OTT stock roster.

I'm giving the nod to Nick here for that big turnaround. I don't think we'll see that kind of point increase over 1 season ever again. 105 points improvement is unreal. And I do recognize what Duncan did tightroping his cap situation and coming out of it unscathed and having that epic season, but in terms of a body of work from the start of the offseason until now, Nick was the better manager hands down.
I also think that while Josh had a great season his big power moves to get his team in this position were done last season, and there were General Manager's like Hertl or Grogs who made big moves and big improvements on their team this year. Hertl went from a lottery team to a contender in early November? with the Benn, Nash and Enstrom moves, and Grogs went from potential lottery team to a big force in the west that was very close to the Western conference finals, all while having the top scorers in every CHL league (Steel, Debrincat, Abramov - 2 of which I believe he drafted). Both have more impressive 16/17 resumes.
Just to put it in perspective Josh had 15 fewer points this season compared to last, while Hertl had 52 more, and Grogers had 38. And remember the award is for the "general manager deemed to have done the best job over the course of the season."

Duncan. He's pretty much dominated the league from start to finish. Can you imagine how good he would have been if he didn't trade Bob? Artificial turnarounds don't impress me. What Duncan has built is not only impressive, but scary to think it could've been even better.

Duncan all the way for me. All his cap shedding in the offseason, losing chara for nothing etc, yet still the best team in the league. The presidents trophy is a tough one to win but he did, the finals are just the cherry on top of what was already a dominant season for him.

I honestly looked at Duncan's roster at one point in the offseason and wrote him off as a contender because of all the trouble he'd have getting under the cap. How you cull that much cap and end up an even better team is as understandable to me as chess is to a chicken.
Such a hard choice this year because WTF 105 point improvement. Awesome job Nick, in the true sense of the word.
Great work Josh too of course. How does back-to-back 60 win seasons see you end up the 3rd best Holland nominee in the Atlantic? Haha.

I'm not sure I even deserve a spot here, most of my work was done last season to build the core of this roster. My one accomplishment from this season was cutting about $15m in cap and not taking much of a step back. Hats off to Duncan for dealing with similar cap issues and coming out even stronger in the end. The Atlantic will surely be a battleground year after year. But as I view this award as a single season prism, my vote goes to Nick, we'll never see such a point jump from one year to the next again in here I would imagine - Tim take that as a challenge

A jump like that is only possible between year 1 and 2. Turn around's will get harder and harder with each year this league is established, all you BBKLers trying to rebuild will get what I mean haha. I think it's safe to say the 105 point improvement is a record that will never be broken in here.

Though with the threat of facing the Atlantic Division it makes sense for him to buy one more year before cashing in his chips. Should have more development time for his kids, and more of them in the farm too.
